Human Cells to Replace Animal Testing For Cosmetic Experiments

In order to lessen cosmetic test in animals, a group of scientist from XCellR8 laboratory in UK is working towards to use human cells those are donated by plastic surgery patients. The test is assumed to be not only less cruel to eradicate animals, but also is more scientific and is able to produce more exact results of the tests.

Dr. Carol Treasure, who is leading the experiment in XCellR8, said: “For skin irritations testing the cells are isolated from human skin that has been donated by people who have had plastic surgery and they've said that they're quite happy for the tissue to be used for research purposes. So human skins cells are isolated from those skin samples and they're grown in the laboratory.”
Apart from the landmark experiment that will allow using human cells in cosmetic test, XCellR8 is also determined to provide a model test that will reveal any health implication to the user. According to experts, human skin is the very first to be exposed to cosmetics and suffer from related disorders, used in beauty products. Many cosmetic ingredients are absorbed into blood and passing it to the organs, leading to vital effects.

Animal-testing for cosmetics is a regular process across the world and as many as 80 percent of the countries test cosmetics first in laboratory before selling it to the customers. China has very strict rules for this. However, the European Union had banned animal testing for cosmetic industry in 2013. Several animal rights organization, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)who had organized protest campaign.
